Pricing Model on Visual Studio Team Suite
I've been kind of wondering how the pricing model for VS2005 Team Suite was going to work, and where the MSDN subscription people were going to figure in to VSTS. I just found this link that gives some more information on the upgrade model for MSDN subscriptions.
My impression is that Microsoft has been trying to figure out where to position VSTS pricing wise for a while now. On one hand they have a product that lines up well competing with some of the Rational suite stuff (which rumor has it has been used in-house on some things in the past). On the other hand most of their install base for Visual Studio is not of the breed that will absorb a $3k+/head licensing cost. How do you position a product to encourage dev teams to step it up a notch without alienating those who don't have the budget or the development maturity model? That's the big question. Most of us are floating along somewhere trying to sort this out with our MSDN subscriptions, MS partner arrangements, and other means to use VS2005.
I'm of the opinion that "yes, VSTS rocks, but a $3K+ rock is something I'd only buy for a very special wedding anniversary".
Now 'scuse me while I go work out my budget so I can keep coding with all of those who call themselves "Architects".
